Para a casa / For the home

Cá em casa a atitude é no sentido de diminuir a pegada ecológica, mas se há algo de que eu não abdico, principalmente nesta fase em que os miúdos ainda se sujam muito à mesa, são os guardanapos de papel. Uma vez que salvo uma ou duas divisões, nada está completo nesta casa e nos faltam imensas coisas (nada essencial, claro), nunca chegamos a comprar um suporte para os guardanapos, que estavam sempre dentro do plástico original. Ora, esta era uma situação que já me andava a fazer confusão há algum tempo (anos?) e este Verão decidi-me a fazer um cesto / caixa / suporte para os colocar, pelo menos para tirar aquele plástico horrível da minha frente. Não é nada original, mas é prático para uso diário e o amarelo, como não podia deixar de ser, alegra-me as refeições. Um projecto tão simples, que fiz em 15 minutos, tantas vezes adiado. Ah... adiar... quem me dera não ter esse dom...

Around here the attitude is towards reducing the ecological footprint. But until now I could not give up paper napkins, specially because the kids are still small and still make some messes at mealtime. Considering my home is a work in progress except for one or two rooms, there are lots of stuff still missing around here (nothing essential, of course!). One of those things is a napkin holder, so we had them in their horrible original  plastic wrap. This is something that was getting on my system for quite a while so I decided I would make some basket / box / something to hold the napkins. It is nothing original, just something so practical for our daily life and in yellow, to cheer my days. Such a simple project so many times procastinated. Ahh... procastination... I wish I didn´t have that gift...

Nana

Há uns meses pediram-me para fazer umas Nanas. Aparentemente, uma Nana consiste de uma fralda de pano com mais algum corpo e embelezada de alguma forma; eu também não sabia! Peguei em duas fraldas de pano normais e cosias uma à outra. Depois fiz uma fita de viés extra-larga e coloquei a toda a volta. A mãe gostou e o bebé adorou. Na altura não me lembrei de tirar fotografias e só agora durante as férias é que tive oportunidade de o fazer.

A couple of months ago I was asked to do some Nana's for a little boy. A Nana, I didn´t know, is a cloth diaper with some extra strenght and cuteness added. So I took two regular cloth diapers (here they are made with gauze fabric), sew them together, made some extra large  bias tape with different fabrics and made some Nana´s. The mother was happy and the baby loved them. At the time I forgot to take pictures and only during my vacations I was able to do it.

Calções de banho / Swimming trunks

 Depois de ver este post e com a praia à porta de casa, fiquei tentada a produzir também calções de banho. Muita procura depois, consegui encontrar um tecido para fazer calções de banho, mas não em Portugal. 

Os calções de banho mais comuns apresentam sempre um forro interior em rede e embora eu não compreenda muito bem o objectivo, não quis ficar atrás e dediquei-me à “cueca de rede”. Claro está que em Portugal, encontrar tecidos especiais que não sejam caríssimos é muito complicado. Ainda antes de começar já eu estava derrotada a pensar que nunca iria encontrar este tecido por cá. Surpresa das surpresas, foi a coisa mais fácil do mundo e a 2 ou 3 euros o metro (!!). 

A loja online que tinha o dito tecido para o exterior dos calções só vendia cortes de 2 yards, o que significa MUITO tecido para calções de banho. Portanto, corri a família toda (já que ao todo são 3 rapazes cá em casa) a riscas!

During early summer I saw this post by Dana and with the beach a step away from home I thought I could try some swimming trunks. After looking around for quite a while I finally managed to find some fabric for swimming shorts, but, of course, not in Portugal.

I don´t know if this is a worldwide rule, but here, boys swimwear usually have an inner linning made out of mesh fabric. I am not quite sure what is the purpose of this, but I went for it. I was already antecipating a hard time to find the mesh fabric and confess I went to the "fight" already with my arms down. Surprisingly it was so easy to find the fabric and it only costed 2€ / meter (!!). 

The online store where I bought the fabric only sold 2 yards cuts which means a lot of fabric at home. So, I dealed with it an made swimming trunks for my three boys (father included).

sapatinhos bebé / baby shoes

Mais um trabalhinho feito durante as férias, cheio de cor! Para um menino que está a começar a andar, que é lindo de morrer e que por acaso até é meu afilhado...

Another set of anti-slipper child shoes, bursting with colour that I made during this summer! For a little boy who isn´t 1 years old yet but is so willing to start walking, who is so adorable and so happens to be my godson :)

Opinião / Request

Preciso urgentemente de uma opinião. Estou a fazer uma mantinha para um bebé nasce lá para Dezembro. O exterior tinha que ser todo em algodão, pelo que optei pelo novo padrão da Riley Blake designs, Alphabet soup, para a parte de cima e uma flanela verde água para a parte de baixo. Para encher usei duas camadas de malha polar. Com todas estas camadas tive que fazer uma espécie de quilt. O que me está agora a incomodar é como vou unir todas as camadas. Eu tinha pensado usar o tecido verde da mesma colecção para fazer a minha própria fita de viés, mas o meu marido diz que o tecido é pouco infantil e sugeriu usar a fita verde forte. Qual é a vossa opinião, qual das opções abaixo gostam mais?

I need your opinion urgentely. I am making a blanket for a baby due in December. The exterior had to be all cotton fabric so I chose the new Alphabet soup from Riley Blake designs for the top and a cozy light green flannel for the back. Inside I used two layers of polar fleece. With all this layers I had to do some sort of quilt (I have never quilted, but it was the only way I could find to put everything together). Now what is bothering me is how will I bind this. I was thinking about making my own bias tape with the coordinating fabric from the same collection, but my husband claims it is not a child pattern and the lime bias tape would look better. So, could you let me know what do you think? Which of the above combinations you like more?
