My First Quilt

Com a chegada de mais um membro à turminha de amigos, comecei a magicar uma prendinha de boas vindas. Tenho tentado fazer um objecto especial para cada um dos pequeninos que se junta a nós. Para esta menina em particular que se iria chamar Maria Leonor (mas que nasceu e se chama Mafalda), pensei em algo romântico, com cores mais suaves mas suficientemente animado para um bebé e pensei numa manta de retalhos, coisa que nunca tinha feito.

Depois de muito pesquisar, devorar com os olhos verdadeiras obras primas que se fazem pelo mundo, ver explicações, tutorials, esquemas, vídeos e montes de imagens, lá me decidi ir pelo mais simples que podia haver: quadrados cosidos aleatoriamente, acolchoado à máquina com linhas rectas e debrum cosido à máquina com ponto zig-zag. Foi um dos trabalhos que me consumiu mais tempo e dedicação, mas o trabalho final é simplesmente delicioso. Mesmo quando não fica perfeito, mesmo quando as costuras não estão todas perfeitamente alinhadas, é um trabalho que traz imensa satisfação, o que me leva a compreender porque muitos se dizem "viciados" nesta arte. É um trabalho de amor e foi com amor que o fiz. Talvez eu também esteja a ficar viciada, já que encomendei tecidos para mais 3 mantas ;)

With the arrival of a new member to the gang of friends I began wondering about a little welcoming gift. I have tried to make something special for each baby from our group of friends. For this girl in particular who would call Mary Eleanor (but who was born and named Mafalda), I thought of something romantic, with soft colors but exciting enough for a baby. I thought of a patchwork quilt, something that I had never done.

After searching a lot, appreciating true masterpieces around the world, go trough tutorials, patterns, videos and lots of pictures, I decided to take the simple route: randomly sewn squares, straight line machine quilting and machine sewn binding. It was one of the most time consuming projects I had ever done, but the end result is delicious. Even when it is not perfect, even when the seams are not perfectly aligned, it's a job that brings great satisfaction, which leads me to understand why many say they are "addicted" to quilting. It's a project that involves a lot of dedication and love and I took my time to put all my love and dedication on it. I think I might be addicted to quilting as I have already ordered fabrics for 3 more quilts!

Aniversário da Rita / Rita's birthday

A Rita é uma menina que faz anos também em Abril, com um dia de diferença do meu filho mais novo. Para uma menina que fez 4 anos fiz uma “market skirt” da Dana e um top que inventei. Se há coisa que tenho aprendido nestas andanças da costura é que se estiver grande corta-se e cose-se de novo, se estiver pequeno vai para o lixo. E o que me dói na alma deitar tecido fora… por isso deixei as alças grandes que facilmente se cortam à medida. A saia tem o tamanho ideal e não fiz qualquer tipo de ajuste às medidas que a Dana dá. Como eu não tenho uma máquina para fazer acabamentos no bordo dos tecidos e que os impedem de desfiar e não tenho tido grandes resultados com o zigzag normal, decidi fazer french seams em todas as costuras. Escusado será dizer que levei o dobro do tempo a costurar uma saia tão simples, mas o resultado final é tão bonito do direito como do avesso!

Rita is a little girl who's birthday is also in April, like my kids. She turned 4 and I made her a "market skirt" using Dana's instructions and a very simple shirred top. I didn't use any pattern, just made a box, hemmed the bottom, shirred the top and added two straps made of bias tape (really cute, this bias tape, hein?). I left the straps a bit too long on purpose because I have learned that it's better big than small. And I honestly suffer whenever I see one of my projects being rejected for being too small. The Skirt was made without any changes to Dana's pattern and as I don't have a serger to finish the seams and the fabric was farying too much I decided to on with french seams. It's like making two skirts! But the finished work looks so good it could be reversible!

Tipi

Os meus filhos fizeram anos em Abril. O mais velho fez 6 e o mais novo fez 3. Como eu já aqui disse anteriormente gosto de lhes dar sempre alguma coisa feita por mim, pelo menos desde que comecei a costurar. Fi-lo no aniversário de 2011, no Natal e voltei a fazê-lo agora! Desta vez fiz uma prenda conjunta, um tipi, ou tenda de índio, ou como lhe queiram chamar. Super simples e com um set de luzes solares do IKEA fica ainda melhor. Pensei durante muitos dias para o fazer, mas fi-lo numa manhã! Fez sucesso na festinha de aniversário.

My kids birthdays are in April (yes, both of them, 2 days apart!!). The older one turned 6 and the younger turned 3. Has I have previously stated I like to always give them something made by me, at least since I started sewing. I did it for their birthdays last year, for Christmas and now again! This time I made a gift for both, a tipi (I am now sure this is how to spell it: teepee?!?), a tent or what ever you want to call it. So easy... and with a set of solar lights from IKEA it looks even better. I thought during several days of how to put it together, mas only spent one morning cutting and sewing! It was a uge success on the birthday party!

Sewing for boys Sew Along - May

Mais um mês que se passou e desta vez consegui terminar os projectos a tempo de participar no Sew Along da Stacey . No mês de Maio haviam duas opções: o Mimi's suspender shorts ou o Hold 'em Up Belt + Going Fishing Hat. Como os calções vão só até ao tamanho 4/5 decidi-me pela segunda opção. Estes são mais dois projectos do livro Sewing for Boys tão fáceis quanto giros e acima de tudo indispensáveis em qualquer guarda-roupa de rapaz!

Another month as passed by and this time I was able to complete the projects in time! It's the last day of the month, but it's still May, right? For this month's sew along Stacey chose 3 patterns. You could either do the Mimi's suspender shorts, which goes only to 4/5 or the Hold 'em up Belt plus the Going Fishing Hat. As I couldn't do the Suspender shorts for my older boy, I went with the accessories choice. These are two projects from the book Sewing for Boys that are as easy as beautiful. Belts and Hats are indispensable in every boys wardrobe.

Usei o mesmo tecido em ambas as peças: algodão orgânico da colecção Robot Fabric de Caleb Grey.

I used the same fabric on both items: organic cotton from the collection Robot Fabric of Caleb Grey.

Adicionei linhas de pontos paralelas a todo o comprimento to cinto. Gosto do resultado e fica com mais estrutura.

I added some parallel rows of stitches on all the lenght of the belt and I think they look great!

O chapéu foi feito com costuras internas e reversível. Gosto do facto de ser reversível, mas acho que fiz asneira em não seguir as directrizes das autoras do livro para deixar as costuras expostas. Assim, deixou de ser um Going Fishing Hat cheio de carácter para ser apenas mais um chapéu... Aprendi a lição, não andar a inventar muito nos moldes de quem sabe, a Shelly e a Karen!

The hat I made with inside seams and reversible. I like the fact that it's reversible, but I think that the fact that I didn't follow the guidelines to leave the seams exposed makes it loose character. This way it is no longer a Going Fising Hat, just an ordinary bucket hat... Lesson Learned: Shelly and Karen know their business, don't mess up with their patterns!

Chapéus, filhos e dias de sol / Hats, sons and sunny days

Ter dois filhos levou-me a aprender que chapéus e babetes nunca são de mais. Actualmente os meus filhos já ultrapassaram a fase dos babetes, mas os chapéus… temos sempre chapéus em casa, no carro, em casa dos avós, eu casa dos tios e até em casa de alguns amigos! Por isso, fiz chapéus para todas as crianças que tenho na minha vida.

Having two kids made me learn that hats and bibs are never too many. Nowadays my kids have left the bibs phase behind, but the hats... are never enough. We have hats at home, in the car, at the grandparents, uncles and even frinds houses! That is why I made hats for all the kids in my life: sons and sons of friends!

Arco-Íris / Rainbow

Lembram-se deste post? Onde me gabei da quantidade astronómica de fita de viés que comprei e das lindas cores que consegui juntar? Na altura não revelei para que a queria, pois agora fica aqui a história toda.

A educadora do meu filho mais novo decidiu celebrar o dia da mãe de forma diferente: pediu às mães para cada uma escolher um dia e ir fazer uma actividade com os meninos todos. Eu lembrei-me que seria giro fazer uma sessão de decoração de bolachas.
E foi! Foi giríssimo! Os miúdos divertiram-se, eu diverti-me a até a educadora decorou uma bolachinha.

Levei o meu ajudante mais velho que não quis perder a diversão.Fiz bolachas grandes para a área de decoração ser generosa e

fiz bolachinhas pequeninas para irmos “petiscando”.

Corei côco ralado

e fiz glacé real também colorido.

Juntei uns sprinklers de açucar

e umas pepitas de chocolate e assim fizemos a festa!

E porque um bom cozinheiro / pasteleiro precisa de proteger a roupa, fiz aventais para todos os meninos.

Remember this post? Where I bragged about the astronomic amount of bias tape I bought and the beautiful colors I could put together? At the time I didn’t reveal the project, but now you get the chance to read the whole story.
My youngest son kindergarten teacher decided to celebrate Mother's Day (here in Portugal it's on the first Sunday of May) differently, she asked the mothers to each pick a day and to do an activity with all the kids in the classroom. I thought it would be really cool to do a session of cookie decorating. And it was! It was so much fun! The kids had fun, I had fun and even the teacher decorated a cookie. I took my oldest helper who didn’t want to miss the fun.
