Husband special requests

Quando a idade começa a fazer-se sentir as maleitas surgem onde menos se espera. O meu marido passa muito tempo ao computador e começou a desenvolver uma tendinite na mão responsável pelo rato, no caso, a direita. Como o calor costuma ajudar nestes casos, fiz uma almofada térmica. Já tinha visto várias destas na net e sabia a facilidade de a fazer. Sei que entre outras coisas se usam carocos de cereja, mas o que eu tinha mais à mão era mesmo arroz. Com o aquecimento no microondas fica com um estranho cheiro a arroz cozido, mas que não é completamente desagradável. Acho que na próxima ponho canela, pelo menos cheira a arroz doce!

  

With the age come aches and pains. My husband spends a great deal of his time on the computer and with time started to feel pain in his wrist due to the position adopted when holding the mouse. As usually heat is a form os alleviating the pain, I made a thermic pillow, just for his wrist to rest on. I had seen several of there online and I knew they were not difficult to make. But I didn't had cherry pits I used rice. After microwave heating it has a strange smell of cooked rice, but it's not so bad. Next time I think I will throw in a dash of cinnamon tohave my house smelling like rice pudding!

Beach Bag

Pediram-me uma mala para a praia, grande, espaçosa, com espaço de arrumação para as coisas grandes, mas também com dois bolsos interiores com velcro para saber sempre onde estão as chaves do carro (se há coisa que não convém perder na praia são as chaves do carro)!

 
O tecido não podia ser mais perfeito, a linha Commute de Jay Cin em algodão orgânico é uma lufada de ar fresco, grita Verão e é um consolo poder passeá-lo. Apliquei entretela termocolante para dar mais estrutura ao saco e o tecido do forro é este do Ikea, bem robusto. Gosto muito. Agora vou ali fazer uma mala destas para mim e já volto!

I was asked to make a beach bag, big enough to take large items like towels and water bottles, but also with small pockets with velcro to always know where are the car keys (if there is something that one shouldn't loose on the beach are the car keys)!  

The fabric couldn't be more perfect, the Commute collection from Jay Cin organic cotton is a breath of fresh air, screams summer and is beautiful to display. I applied fusible interfacing to give more structure to the bag and for the lining I used this Ikea fabric, very sturdy. I like it. Now off I go to make one of these for myself!

Scarf / Lenço

 

Andava à procura de um lenço / echarpe de Verão que me agradasse e por mais laboraiosa que fosse na minha procura não havia meio de encontrar nada que me satisfizesse. Claro está que quando assim é começo logo a magicar como fazer. Os tecidos mais finos são muito difíceis de trabalhar, pelo menos com o meu grau de experiência.

Então lembrei-me que tinha na minha colecção dois fat quarters de algodão orgânico da Jay Cin (Mod Basics) que têm um toque simplesmente divinal, super macios! Já tinha visto várias vezes pela blogosfera lenços feitos com algodão para patchwork e pensei: porque não? Como com dois fat quarters não se faz um lenço precisei de lhe juntar mais um tecido, branco e super leve que usei aqui. O tecido dos elefantes tinha-o encomendado tendo em mente uma pessoa em particular, por isso, fiz este lenço para lhe oferecer.

I was looking for a summer scarf that would suit my taste and as much as I searched for it,  there was no way to find something that satisfied me. Of course, when this happens I start wondering how can I do it! The most thin and delicate fabrics are very difficult to work at least with my level of experience. 

Then I remembered that I had in my collection two fat quarters of organic cotton from Jay Cin (Mod Basics) that feel simply divine, super soft! I had seen several times in the blogosphere scarves made ​​with quilting cotton  and thought: why not? As two fat quarters aren´t enough to make a scarf I added another fabric, a white super light cotton fabric that I also used here. The fabric of the elephants was ordered with a special person in mind do I made this something for a particular person, so I made this scarf to offer her.

Patchwork

Gosto muito do padrão zig-zag e como tinha no cesto dos retalhos uns quadradinhos pequenos já costadinhos, fiz uma tentativa. Fiquei surpreendida com o resultado, pensei que com peças tão pequeninas ia fazer grande asneira, mas até correu bem. Apliquei o resultado numa babete e mais uma vez o meu amor pelo patchwork cresceu...

I love the zig-zag pattern I often see in quilts and as I had some really small already cut squares of fabric in my scrap bucket I decided to give it a try. I was actually surprised with what I had accomplished because I was expecting a huge mess with such small squares, but it turned out really nice! I applied the piece in a baby bib and my love for patchwork grew once again...

Sewing for boys Sew Along - June

Para o Sew along deste mês a Stacey escolheu um dos projectos que mais medo me metia (sim, metia!). A Henry Shirt, cheia de detalhes deliciosos, mas que eu temia pela sua dificuldade. Claro está que era medo infundado, tudo que este livro apresenta é simplesmente fácil! Eu fiz duas camisas, uma para cada rapaz. Passei o dia todo antes de voar para Oslo agarrada à camisa do mais velho, mas valeu a pena!

 Nestas coisas eu tenho sempre medo de errar, fazer as camisas demasiado fantasiosas e convenhamos que o mais velho já vai entrar para a escola primária e não vai poder andar sempre com roupa cheia de bonecada. Mas enquanto ele deixar, eu faço destas coisas!

A camisa do mais pequenino é o tamanho 2/3 do livro. Como ele é barrigudinho fica-lhe bem. Usei os tecidos da colleccão Back Yard Baby, de Patty Sloniger, vencedora do concurso Project Selvage e fabricado por Michael Miller. É algodão orgânico com um toque super suave e é um pouco mais fino do que o convencional algodão para patchwork (mas não sei porquê). Usei o Windy day para o "corpo", e o Snake Skin em cinzento para a peça lateral. Acho que a combinação ficou giríssima, mas fico a aguardar as vossas opiniões.
 

Para o maior usei o tamanho 6/7 que estando bem em comprimento, é um pouco largo pois o rapaz é esticadinho! Como a camisa tinha muitas peças nem me atrevi a tentar alterar o molde. Tendo em conta a inspiracão retro da camisa acho que até não fica muito mal, o pior é mesmo no pescoço onde fica a nadar. Talvez tenha que por uma mola extra, mais perto do colarinho. Para esta camisa usei tecidos da colecção Robot Factory de Caleb Grey para Robert Kaufman. Já tinha usado a versão laranja deste padrão para o sew along de Maio. Agora optei pelo verde com robots em branco combinado com o azul com as rodas dentadas. Apesar de tudo ao longe até fica discreto, parece uma simples camisa aos quadrados, pois os desenhos estão sobre uma base quadriculada e não são muito evidentes.

I was running on a really tight schedule, but I did it! I left Portugal on the 14th of June but was able to finish the challenge before coming to Norway, Wee! 



For this month's sew along Stacey chose a project that scared me the most (yes it did!). The Henry Shirt is full of delightful details, but I was kind of scared to get my hand on one of those. It is clear now that the fear was unfounded, everything in this book (so far) is just easy peasy! I made two shirts, one for each boy. I spent the whole day before flying to Oslo woking on the shirt for the older boy!  

With the boys clothes I am always affraid of going too far. The oldest is about to start primary school and will not be able to always wear crazy patterns shirts. But, while he doesn't mind I will make him these things!

The shirt for the little guy is a size 2/3. As he still has the cutest round belly, it fits him just great. I used fabrics in the collection Back Yard Baby from Patty Sloniger, winner of Project Selvage and manufactured by Michael Miller. It is organic cotton with a super soft touch and slightly thinner than the conventional quilting cotton (though I have no idea why). I used Windy Day for the main piece, and Snake Skin in gray for the side panels. I think the combo turned out sooo cute, but I look forward to hearing from you.

For the older boy I used a size 6/7 which is ok in length, althoug it is a little wide! As the shirt had so many pieces I didn't dare try to change the pattern. Given the retro inspired vibe the shirt has, I think that is not that bad, the worst is around the neck.. Maybe I have to add another button closer the collar. I used fabrics from the collection of Caleb Grey Robot Factory for Robert Kaufman. I already used the orange version of this pattern in May sew along. Now I chose the green with white robots combined with the gears in blue. The shirt turned out quite discreet which made me very happy. I like it, how about you?

 

For Mafalda

Para a menina Mafalda, para quem fiz o quilt, fiz também uma ovelhinha. Sei que a mãe gosta por ser de signo carneiro e já que a rapariga ia ser carneiro também, fiz um molde para uma ovelhinha e juntei-lhe umas bandeirinhas para enfeitar o quarto. A ovelhinha foi feita em bombazine branca e ficou super fofinha. As bandeirinhas era um painel pré-feito que fazia parte da colecção de tecidos que usei para o quilt, a linha Delighted de Riley Blake Designs.

To Mafalda, the little girl to who I made the quilt, I also made a little lamb. I know the mother likes sheep because she is from the zoodiac sign Aires and as Mafalda was going to be Aires as well I made a lamb pattern and added a garland to make it a more interesting present. The lamb is made out of corduroy and it is so soft! The garland is from a panel that was part of the fabric collection used in the quilt, Delighted by Riley Blake Designs
