Como vos disse aqui, depois do primeiro quilt comecei logo a planear os próximos. Por isso, durante uma série de 4 posts vou mostrar aqui os planos que tenho para uns quilts e pedir a vossa opinião sincera quanto à escolha dos tecidos / padrões.

Para um casal especial que tem princiaplmente tons quentes na sua sala, um quilt de cores vibrantes. Estes também foram encomendados na Fabric.com quando eles tiveram uns mega saldos em que todos os tecidos estavam abaixo de 4$ / yard (daí o shoppinhg spree). Ainda não escolhi o padrão do patchwork, mas estava a pensar num quilt zig-zag ou nos blocos pinwheels. Qual é a vossa opinião?

For a special couple that has mainly warm colors in the living room, a bright colored quilt. They were also ordered at Fabric.com when they had a mega sale in which all fabrics were under 4$ /yard (hence the shoppinhg spree). I haven't chosen the pattern yet but I am leaning towards a zig-zag or pinwheel pattern! Give me some thoughts about this! 

Portanto, sendo que este, este e o que está neste post são para oferecer no Natal, as meninas especialistas em patchwork acham que tenho tempo para fazer isto tudo? São tudo quilts  que terão aproximadamente 180 x 100 - 120 cm. Há que ter também em consideração que tenho trabalho a tempo inteiro, dois filhos, um deles a começar o primeiro ano em Setembro e estou a entrar no meu último ano do doutoramento. Ora agora que escrevi estas palavras começo a ver que talvez não tenha tempo... Mas pelo menos vou tentar!

Considering that this, this and the quilt in this post are to offer as Christmas gifts, you girls quilt specialists think I have time to do all this? They are all quilts that will be about 70 x 47 inches. We must also take into consideration that I work full time, have two sons, one of them begins the first year of elementary school in September and I am starting my final year of the PhD. Well, now that I wrote these words I begin to see that time might not be enough ... But at least I will try!

Para o A., o meu pequeno A. planeei fazer um quilt um pouco mais trabalhoso, com estes tecidos. Muito azul, com toques de laranja, castanho, verde e o amarelo ainda está em ponderacão. Com o avançar do trabalho vou avaliando. Estes tecidos foram sendo encomendados aqui e ali, alguns já tinha, outros foram pedidos à Fabric.com que tem uma enorme escolha, excelente servico e preços muito convidativos. O envio é um pouco mais caro, mas vale mesmo a pena já que como vem por UPS chega muito rápido. Opiniões, sugestões, críticas, são todas bem vindas!

 For A., my dearest A. I planned to make a quilt a bit more complicated, using these fabrics. Lots of blue, with some orange, brown and green. The yellow is still under consideration. I will evaluate as I proceed. These fabrics have been ordered here and there, some were already on my stash other were ordered for Fabric.com has a huge choice, excellent service and very attractive prices. Shipping is a little more expensive (international shipping, because they offer free shipping inside the U.S. on orders over 35$) but really worth it as it comes in UPS and arrives in 1 week. I welcome all sugestions, opinions and comments on my plans!

 Para os meus queridos pais, uma colecção muito clássica, mas com um toque fresco de modernidade, o Barefoot Roses que comprei na Skye ReveFabrics. Depois de ver este tutorial (que coloquei imediatamente no Pinterest, claro) fiquei com vontade de viver perigosamente e arriscar tudo num quilt de granny squares.

To my dear parents, a very classic collection, but with a fresh touch of modernity, Barefoot Roses by Tanya Whelan bought on Skye Reve Fabrics. After watching this tutorial (which I put immediately into Pinterest, of course) I was willing to live dangerously and risk everything on a quilt of granny squares.

 Para mim, para a minha querida casa, para o meu lar e para as minhas noites de sofá, um quilt de tamanho generoso, com a linha Commute de Jay Cin. Estes tecidos foram encomendados na Etsy, esse maravilhoso lugar online onde nos podemos perder todos os dias. A Lela da Cedar House Fabrics é uma simpatia e trata de tudo com uma eficácia impressionante. Já tratei também de colocar no meu mood board de quilts o padrão que planeio seguir e que será este. A partida não me parece um quilt muito complicado pois usa peças grandes e parece-me ser algo permissivo quanto ao alinhamento das costuras. Que me dizem vocês?

 For me, to my beloved house, to my home and my nights on the couch, a generously sized quilt, with Commute from Jay Cin. These fabrics were ordered on Etsy, this wonderful place online where we can lose our minds every day. Lela from Cedar House Fabrics is a sweet girl that handles your orders with impressive efficiency. I have also started to Pin some wuilt love on Pinteres. For this particular quilt I am planning to follow this pattern. It does not seem a very complicated quilt because it uses large pieces and it seems to be somehow permissive about seams alignment. What says you?

Patchwork

Gosto muito do padrão zig-zag e como tinha no cesto dos retalhos uns quadradinhos pequenos já costadinhos, fiz uma tentativa. Fiquei surpreendida com o resultado, pensei que com peças tão pequeninas ia fazer grande asneira, mas até correu bem. Apliquei o resultado numa babete e mais uma vez o meu amor pelo patchwork cresceu...

I love the zig-zag pattern I often see in quilts and as I had some really small already cut squares of fabric in my scrap bucket I decided to give it a try. I was actually surprised with what I had accomplished because I was expecting a huge mess with such small squares, but it turned out really nice! I applied the piece in a baby bib and my love for patchwork grew once again...

My First Quilt

Com a chegada de mais um membro à turminha de amigos, comecei a magicar uma prendinha de boas vindas. Tenho tentado fazer um objecto especial para cada um dos pequeninos que se junta a nós. Para esta menina em particular que se iria chamar Maria Leonor (mas que nasceu e se chama Mafalda), pensei em algo romântico, com cores mais suaves mas suficientemente animado para um bebé e pensei numa manta de retalhos, coisa que nunca tinha feito.
 

 
Depois de muito pesquisar, devorar com os olhos verdadeiras obras primas que se fazem pelo mundo, ver explicações, tutorials, esquemas, vídeos e montes de imagens, lá me decidi ir pelo mais simples que podia haver: quadrados cosidos aleatoriamente, acolchoado à máquina com linhas rectas e debrum cosido à máquina com ponto zig-zag. Foi um dos trabalhos que me consumiu mais tempo e dedicação, mas o trabalho final é simplesmente delicioso. Mesmo quando não fica perfeito, mesmo quando as costuras não estão todas perfeitamente alinhadas, é um trabalho que traz imensa satisfação, o que me leva a compreender porque muitos se dizem "viciados" nesta arte. É um trabalho de amor e foi com amor que o fiz. Talvez eu também esteja a ficar viciada, já que encomendei tecidos para mais 3 mantas ;)

 

 With the arrival of a new member to the gang of friends I began wondering about a little welcoming gift. I have tried to make something special for each baby from our group of friends. For this girl in particular who would call Mary Eleanor (but who was born and named Mafalda), I thought of something romantic, with soft colors but exciting enough for a baby. I thought of a patchwork quilt, something that I had never done.  

  
After searching a lot, appreciating true masterpieces around the world, go trough tutorials, patterns, videos and lots of pictures, I decided to take the simple route: randomly sewn squares, straight line machine quilting and machine sewn binding. It was one of the most time consuming projects I had ever done, but the end result is delicious. Even when it is not perfect, even when the seams are not perfectly aligned, it's a job that brings great satisfaction, which leads me to understand why many say they are "addicted" to quilting. It's a project that involves a lot of dedication and love and I took my time to put all my love and dedication on it. I think I might be addicted to quilting as I have already ordered fabrics for 3 more quilts!
